Never Miss a Deadline With These Time Management Tips
Adulting is hard, and sometimes there’s so much to do, that it nearly seems impossible. But not really. The reality is that many of us are not managing our time as well as we could be. Here are some time management tips that I’ve gathered that will help you jumpstart your long to do list.
Put Away the Distractions of Electronic Screens
With everything being so technology based these days, it can be so difficult to imagine being
productive and unplugging as one in the same. But a lot of these time management tips revolve around one idea, and that is to avoid distractions.
If your task has nothing to do with tech, the solution is easy; just turn it all off while you complete your task.
If not, something simple like turning off unrelated notifications or choosing to play music rather than a Netflix binge can do the trick.
Crush Your Hardest Task First, Then The Easier Ones
When you have something difficult looming over you, procrastination is way more appealing than the task ahead. By starting off with the hardest to do on your list, there is nothing unpleasant to avoid.
Another great thing about doing the hardest tasks first is that you have more time to deal with any problems or difficulties that arise. For instance, if you have to hand in a report at the end of the day and you came across an error that you didn’t see before, wouldn’t you like to have the rest of the day to deal with it, instead of just a few minutes? Basically, by putting difficult tasks before the simple tasks, you’re giving yourself more time to deal with unexpected headaches.
This makes your other errands seem like a piece of cake! Once you have the momentum from finishing your biggest errand, there will be no stopping you! Trust me when I say that of all the time management tips out there, this is one that will help you out greatly.
Make A Done List and Feel The Accomplishment
Speaking of morale, isn’t it just the biggest let down to look at a massive list of things you need to get done and none of them are checked off? It’s overwhelming!
What if instead you were looking at a nice list of things you’ve already knocked out of the ballpark?
Making a done list is a great motivator to make you feel like you’ve already gotten on a roll. This can be done in two ways.
- One, you can start by writing down what you get done as you finish each task.
- Two, you can make a to do list that begins with a few things you’ve already finished at the top.
Now there are some things you can cross off as soon as you make the list!
Set a Time Limit And Make it a Game
If you love procrastinating, a one hour task can get stretched into an all day affair without even blinking an eye. The best way to beat this is to set a time limit in which you HAVE to finish the task. If you’re competitive, you can find yourself enjoying the race to beat the clock. If putting a clock on yourself feels like too much pressure, give yourself a small reward for keeping within the time constraint. It’s always easier to get things done with a prize at stake.
The Amount Of Time You Spend On a Task Depends on How Long You Can Procrastinate ~ Fred Von Winkle
Some may be tempted to set a punishment for not finishing a task on time, but this can lead to failure. A negative consequence is stressful. This can make you feel defeated if the task isn’t finished, leading to procrastination yet again.
Take Time For Yourself And Re-energize
Even though you have a full plate, if you don’t feel as though you are taken care of you may find yourself too stressed to function. Start and end your day with a few small moments for yourself. Before you get the ball rolling, take some time to read the paper with coffee and your favorite creamer. Or, take ten minutes to rock a YouTube yoga sequence. At the end of the day crack into your DVR watch list or spend some time in the tub with a glass of wine. Whatever your thing is, treat yourself for working hard! At the end of the day, it pays to stay sane.
Time Management Tips You Should Never Go Without
Listen, you can have as many tips as you want, but you have to have some motivation. SELF-MOTIVATION! Before you procrastinate some more, get to work and implement just one of these tips.
